Gentriwhy?
In the art installation Gentriwhy, the public is able to gamble on owning a landmark for only 25¢. The artist placed an edition of 200 hand printed, sewed, signed and numbered pillows of historic buildings into a relic arcade crane game to comment on current real estate, market and social issues.
The artist’s pillows are of some of the oldest structures in Williamsburg, Brooklyn – the HSBC Bank building, McCarren Pool and Domino Sugar Factory. These physical monuments symbolize the stolid, rich past of Brooklyn. They also embody the neighborhood’s emerging future as they stand on the verge of demolition. Remnants of past modern ages, these landmarks are cultural icons in the center of public debate about forging ahead in contemporary times and preserving one’s heritage.
